About the Bogatyr variety
A generous Bogatyr apple with character. A large, hardy variety fully lives up to its name. This apple is a real guardian of warmth and vitamins, capable of maintaining its strength and freshness until spring. Its name was born from this incredible ability to be stored for a long time, as if from a fairy tale about a hero ready to protect from adversity.
History of the Bogatyr variety
The Bogatyr variety was bred in the 1920s at the All-Russian Research Institute of Genetics and Selection of Fruit Plants named after I.V. Michurin. Its creator, breeder Sergei Fedorovich Chernenko, sought to obtain an apple tree that could withstand harsh climates, bear fruit consistently and be stored for a long time.
The “Bogatyr” variety is the result of a careful crossing of the Landsberg Ranet and Antonovka, two giants of the apple world, from which it inherited frost resistance, excellent survival and excellent taste. Introduced almost 100 years ago, it is still popular, becoming a true hybrid of classic and strength. Included in the state register in 1971 for the North-Western, Central and Central Black Earth regions.
This late-maturing hybrid was bred for winter consumption. The Bogatyr trees grow tall and powerful (4–6 meters), like ancient guardians of the garden. Harvest maturity occurs in mid-September. The fruits are real giants, large (120-200 g), round, with a creamy yellow canvas, touched with blush on the sunny side.
