It wasn't until 1991 that the variety was officially introduced to the market—and since then, it has changed the way the world thinks about the taste of apples.

In the '70s, a plant labeled MN 1711 was already on the discard list—it was believed it wouldn't produce a sufficient yield. But agronomist David Bedford decided to give the tree a second chance.

That Was Almost Lost

The variety was bred

At the University of Minnesota as part of a program to create apple trees capable of withstanding the state’s harsh frosts. Its ancestors are the Macoun and Honeygold varieties.

Breeders were searching for an apple that would remain tender and juicy even under winter’s icy crust—and they found it.
