Apple breeding

2026-06-17 11:45

How do new varieties of apples appear? The breeding process takes years, and the result determines what apples we will eat decades from now. Let's look at what's behind each new variety.

What is breeding

Breeding is when specialists cross different varieties of apple trees to preserve valuable properties and obtain new ones: taste, crunch, resistance to frost and the ability to be stored for months.

From crossing to variety

Modern apple varieties emerge thanks to years of work. It can take 15–20 years from the first crossing to the appearance of the variety in the garden. In the process, thousands of unique seedlings are grown, but only a few become the varieties that we know.

Breeding allows us to study old varieties and, based on them, enrich the apple crop with new ones. This is not only science, but also a form of respect for the garden's past and support for its future.

Why breeding is important

The world is changing: the climate is becoming less predictable, and the garden needs help to adapt. Breeding helps apple trees cope with new challenges.
